One week recap (at Calligaris)
It's now a Friday and it's time for a one week recap at my new job, Calligaris, an Italian furniture company. So far, things look really well.
Basically, my first week was a training phase and I will continue training until I master everything there is to know. Simone and Cristina, my bosses, have been very patient with me and very appreciative of my work. Thus far, I've learned how identify furniture items, make orders, and put them on the computer that's linked to Italy. I've learned so many technical aspects of this job, in just 5 days.
However, I'm not fully comfortable yet. There is so much to learn and I figure it'll take me around 2-3 months before I really be at par with both Simone and Cristina. Nevertheless, I am willing to stick it out and learn from them.
Anyway, the big news for today is that they offered me to work with them permanently. That means I'll be their employee and will not be under the staffing agency's payroll. In a way, that's job security for me because it means I will be employed there for the rest of my life unless I resign, get laid off, or do something stupid that merits me to be fired.
Cristina talked to me just before she left for Italy this morning. Initially, the plan had been for me to train under Simone so that I can eventually replace him. Apparently, he didn't want to stay in the Bay Area so they tried to find someone who would take his place. And then they found me. Later on, Simone decided to stay but, as Cristina said, there's a lot of work to be done and Simone needed an assistant. That's where I finally got put into the picture.
After 3 months, when the contract with the staffing agency expires, Calligaris will employ me as one of their own. And I accepted, partially because I kinda like the job and mostly because if I don't take it, I have to start all over again in the job hunt. And that, to me, is quite foolish since they're offering me $16 an hour after the 3rd month.
Imagine that. Looks like I finally found the job where I'm gonna stay. It's not that stressful or anything and I don't take any work home. Whatever is in the office stays in the office and I get to leave at around 5 PM. Add to that the savings (in both time and money) I get from just taking a car. Around 30-45 minutes to work and $20 a week in gas. Not bad...
Finally, a job that I'm gonna hang on to. Finally...
